ADB-Fubinaca

adb-fubinacaADB – FUBINACA, a synthetic cannibinoid, is a highly potent designer drug

ADB – FUBINACA is one of many synthetic cannibinoids termed ‘designer drugsin the indazole – 3 – carboxaminde family and is one of many highly potent agonists of CB1 (EC50 = 0.24 – 21 nM) and CB2 (EC50 = 0.88 – 15 nM) receptors. It is an active ingredient in products made from artificial cannibus.

It is similar but chemically different from the natural tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Designer drugs are artificially made to produce hallucinogenic or narcotic effects but have a slightly different structure than their natural counterparts. The slight difference in structure is critical because the compound is designed to avoid drug laws or create confusion regarding intellectual property.

The structure of ADB – FUBINACA, based on indole and indazole scaffolds, contributes to its chemical properties. It has a carboxamide positioned at the 3 – indazole. This feature is similar to STS – 135 and SDB – 001. It is nearly identical in structure to AB – FUBINACA but the latter has a tert – butyl group and ADB – FUBINACA has an isopropyl group. ADSB – FUB – 187 is an analogue to ADB – FUBINACA, but has a more functionalized carboxamide substituent.

The formal IUPAC name for ADB – FUBINACA is N – (1 – Amino–3, 3 – dimethy l – 1–oxobutan–2 – y l) – 1 – ( 4 – fluorobenzy l ) – 1 H – indazole–3–carboxamide. It has a molar mass of 382.43 g/mol and its chemical formula is C21H23FN4O2.

Intoxication by use of ADB – FUBINACA can be fatal and has been associated with coronary arterial thrombosis (formation of a blood clot in an artery that restricts blood flow and can affect any organ).

The company Pfizer holds the patent WO 2009/106982, which includes the S – enantiomer (one of a pair of chemical compounds that have structures that are nonsuperimposable mirror – images) of ADB – FUBINACA.

In the United States, ADB – FUBINACA is classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, meaning that it is recognized as having a high potential for abuse and there is currently no accepted medicinal use for treatment or chemical therapy. It is considered a toxic and unsafe substance and is not be used under medical supervision. Prescriptions cannot be written for this substance in the USA.

In Canada it is classified as a Schedule II controlled drug, meaning that the penalty for possession, if treated as an indictable offence, is imprisonment up to a maximum of 5 years. The heaviest penalty for trafficking or possession for the purpose of trafficking is maximum life imprisonment. The heaviest penalty for exportation (or possession for the purpose of exportation) when tried as an indictable offence is maximum life imprisonment. The heaviest penalty for production when tried as an indictable offence is a maximum of 7 years imprisonment.

In Germany it is classified as Anlage II (Prohibited), meaning that possession and trade without license or prescription is illegal.
