NM-2201

nm-2201NM-2201, which may also go by the name CBL-2201, is a synthetic cannabinoid that has a chemical structure that includes an indole core group.

NM-2201 goes under the IUPAC name of naphthalen-1-yl 1-(5-fluoropentyl)-1H-indole-3-carboxylate. It has a molar mass of 375.4 grams and an empirical chemical formula of C24H22FNO2.

The structure of NM-2201 is highly similar to that of the indole based synthetic cannabinoid AM-2201. However Instead of the bridge between the indole and naphthalene ring goups containing a ketone group it instead has an ester group. This has lead to some speculation that NM-2201 may be metabolised faster at the liver than AM-2201 as the ester functional group is a target for highly abundant and efficient esterase enzymes in the body. However it is worth noting that full in-vivo studies in to the metabolism of NM-2201 have yet to be carried out and any such speculations are just that and based on known trends in medicinal chemistry.

Pharmacologically NM-2201 acts as a full agonist at CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors. The cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1) was first identified in 1993 as a significant site of action for the chemical Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) which is one of the primary psychoactive constituents of the plant based drug marijuana, also known as cannabis, that is produced from the plant cannabis sativa.

The CB1 receptor which has been identified as the target site of action for THC is found within the mammalian central nervous system and is known as a mediator of the psychoactive effects of THC in cannabis. It can be crudely surmised that chemicals acting as an agonist at the CB1 receptor like NM-2201 will have psychoactive effects analogous to that of THC in cannabis which is itself a CB1 agonist. The main effects of CB1 agonists are analgesic (pain relieving), anxiety based reactions (both anxiolytic and anxiogenic), appetite modulation, affect on motor control (gross body movement) and hypotension (lowering of the blood pressure).

Both natural and synthetic CB1 agonists are known to generate euphoria and act as pain-relievers.

NM-2201 is described as a potent synthetic cannabinoid however its full physiological profile has not been fully elucidated. As such the chemical is for research and forensic use and should not be ingested by humans.

Purely speculative and unverified online sources claim that the action of the chemical is fast and strong. It may induce a mild dissociative effect with some euphoria. Feelings of “mellowness” have been reported as well as enhanced enjoyment of music and a “body high”. Users also report psychedelic qualities, closed eye visuals, feelings of body “warmth” and sedation.

It is potent but perhaps not as long lasting as a comparable synthetic cannabinoid JWH-018. Caution with respect to dosage is highly advised with reports of use in the 5 mg range and effects lasting for approximately 2 hours.

Be aware that there have also been reports of a steep dose-response curve (increasing the dose slightly has a huge and not proportional effect), loss of consciousness, anxiety, paranoia and feelings of sickness.
